חַיָּיבm. (חוּב) 1) debtor. B. Mets.12b בשח׳ מודה when the debtor admits (that the note has not been paid); a. fr. 2) (he is) bound, (he is) guilty. Peah IV, 7 ח׳ he is bound (to leave the poor mans corner). Keth.30b ולרבא ח׳ and according to Rabas opinion he must pay; a. v. fr.Sabb.I, 1 ח׳ is guilty (of Sabbath-breaking, eventually bound to bring a guilt-offering); a. v. fr.Pl. חַיָּיבִין. Ber.III, 1 ח׳ are bound (to read the Shma); a. fr.Fem. חַיֶּיבֶת. Hag. 4a, a. e. שהאשה ח׳ בה which woman is bound to observe; a. fr.Pl. חַיָּיבוֹת. Ib.; a. fr. 3) wicked.Fem. as ab. Mekh. Bshall.s.1 מלכות ח׳ wicked government (usu. רְשָׁעָה).
